MARYVILLE -- One of the greatest seasons in Sullivan South history came to an end Friday night at the hands of one of the greatest programs in Tennessee high school footballl history.

Unbeaten Maryville made the South Rebels (12-2) their 59th straight victim in the state semifinals and will be looking to win an unprecedented fourth straight Class 4A championship next week in Murfreesboro.

South made a game it for a while before bowing, 48-21.

The Rebels were within a touchdown of Maryville at halftime, 21-14, and were driving to close it to that margin again when Kaleb Kitzmiller was stripped of the ball at the Maryville 5. The defending state champs recovered at the 6 and then drove 94 yards on 9 plays to make it 35-14 and never looked back.

"That was a big play,'' said South coach Stacy Carter. "We played almost perfect ball in all but one of our games this season and couldn't afford any mistakes against a great football team and that cost us. But this team really played over its head for most of the season. We just ran into a really good football team tonight.''

The game may have matched the state's top two quarterbacks. South's Curt Phillips came in approaching 4,000 yards total offense for the season and was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state on Thursday. He is headed to Wisconsin on scholarship in January. He scored all three South TDs on runs of 11, 18 and 5 yards and finished with 121 yards rushing on 25 carries and completed 13 of 18 passes for another 81 yards for a total offense of 202 yards in the game.

Maryville's Brent Burnette, who came in with over 3,000 yards passing and 33 TD passes, also lived up to his billing by passing for 252 yards and three TDs while completing 13 of 19 passes. Twice, he hit Tyler Clendenen for scores -- the first for 58 yards and the second for 22
-- and started it with a 62-yard bomb to Chris Jordan after avoiding a sack and hitting Jordan, who had freed himself from a defender, in stride for the score.

Maryville, which was limited to just 67 rushing yards in the first half, changed blocking schemes at halftime and matched its passing output for the game -- 252 yards -- when the final whistle blew.

"It was nothing the running backs did,'' said Maryville's Thomas Shuler, who got 114 of his 150 yards on 18 carries in the second half. "The coaches changed up our blocks at halftime and the linemen really picked it up.''

"We went behind the tight end and kicked out with the running back there in the second half,'' said Maryville coach George Quarles. "That's where Thomas got most of his yards.''

Tim Rodrigues finished with 97 yards on 11 carries.

Shuler had TD runs of 4, 39 and 17 yards in the game as Maryville improved to 14-0. Tyler Martin picked off a Phillips pass and took it back 45 yards for a score with 22 seconds left for Maryville's final score.

Burnette is drawing the attention of such schools as North Carolina, Virginia and Middle Tennessee State.

Clendenen was his favorite target Friday night, catching 5 passes for 134 yards and the two TDs.

"He's been hitting us like that all season,'' said Clendenen, a junior. "We know each other so well. I know where he's going to be and he knows where I am going to be. He's a great quarterback.''

But so is Phillips.

"We came in just trying to make sure he didn't run all over the field on us,'' said Quarles. "He's pretty good. You don't play against many like that. You can't simulate it in practice.''

The quickness of the Maryville defensive backs limited Phillips and the passing attack to just 17 yards in the first half. Finally, in the third quarter, Phillips solved the Rebel defense for six straight completions, but it was on the sixth completion on the drive that Kitzmiller was stripped and the game changed.

"We came out and we battled,'' said Phillips. "They're a great team, but we came out hard and we were playing hard at the end -- especially Taylor Fletcher. It's been a heckuva ride. It was a lot of fun.''

Fletcher finished with 115 yards gained on 22 carries to help South finished with 245 yards rushing on the ground.

Phillips said the quickness of the Maryville defenders made it tough for the receivers to separate from the defenders.

"We knew coming in that they were very quick,'' said Phillips. "We did okay on offense. We just couldn't keep them from scoring.''

Phillips said he knew nothing about the Gatorade Player of the Year Award until he learned he'd won it.

"That's pretty cool,'' said Phillips, who will report to Wisconsin on Jan. 14 to begin his college career and go through spring practice with the Badger.

"That's for all classifications in the state,'' said Carter. "It's a great honor. But we consider him the best player in the state and I think everyone knows that -- including Maryville.''

"I don't think there's any question we had the best two quarterbacks in the state on the same field here tonight,'' said Quarles.

South equaled its best season ever by making it to the state semis. It lost to Cleveland at home in the state semis in 1993, 21-0. That team also finished 12-2.

They will be favored to beat Maplewood. Can't overlook them though. Maplewood beat Hillsboro last week.

Maryville and Alcoa


Both of these schools have a shot to do something that no other school in Tennessee have ever done. They both have a chance to win 4 state titles in a row in their class. Maryville is 4A and Alcoa is 2A.Both schools have great players and great coaching.

Since the start of 2004 Alcoa is 54-5. 4 of those losses are to Maryville High School.The other loss is to Fulton High School in 2006. Fulton was 3A Champ in 2006. Alcoa has had great players like Brandon Warren(FSU/UT),Dustin Lindsey(UT),Rae Sykes(UT),Kyrus Lankster(UK),Brian Sommer and Randall Cobb(UK commit) Alcoa kills those other 2A Teams. Alcoa will play Goodpasture for the 2A Title. Alcoa has killed Goodpasture the last 2 years in the 2A Title game. 55-13 in 2005 and 31-3 in 2006. Alcoa is heavily favored in the 2A Title game next friday.Alcoa will go for their 9th state title next friday.

Since 2004 Maryville is 59-0. Maryville will go for their 4th straight 4A title next saturday.Maryville has had some great players. Carl Stewart(AUB),Chuck Prugh(UT),Nick Black(Clem),Scott Wilks(Marshall),Tyler Maples(UT) and Aaron Douglas (UT Commit). Maryville has also sent tons of kids to real small colleges. As talented as Maryville is the reason Maryville is so good is because they have the best coaching staff in Tennessee. George Quarles is one of the brightest coaches in the country. He also has a great staff. George Quarles is going to be an assistant in the US Army All Star game. Maryville will play Nashville Maplewood for the 4A Title.

Another couple tidbits on Maryville. If they win next saturday they will have their 11th state title which will be the best of all time in Tennessee. Maryville has won 6 state titles in 7 years. Maryville has won 7 state titles in 9 years. Maryville has won 112 out of their last 114 games.

Alcoa and Maryville are both twin cities in Blount County. They are separated by a creek. Pistol Creek. The Alcoa/Maryville game is called the battle of Pistol Creek.
